K'gari - Fraser Island

In many ways it is the sand of K'gari (formerly Fraser Island) that gives the destination its enigmatic beauty. It has claimed the title of the largest sand island in the world extending 120 km’s in length and 15 km’s in width, is World Heritage Listed among the likes of Uluru, Kakadu, and The Great Barrier Reef, and is the only place where rainforest is known to grow on white granular pieces of micro shell.

It is from the tops of the famed sand dunes or ‘sand blows’ reaching up to 224 metres in height, you can enjoy breathtaking views of sharks, dolphins, whales, turtles, passing ships and boats, as well as some of the 40 or so inland lakes dotted across the rainforest-laden landscape.

This destination is an alluring mixture of tranquillity and action. On the one side there are crystalline creeks, uninterrupted stretches of white sand beaches flanked by colourful cliffs, and striking blue, tea coloured, and clear inland lakes fringed sandy beaches. The other side offers hundreds of kilometres of 4WD tracks for the adrenalin junkies to smash through and get lost along.

For the nature lovers there is a prolific endemic population of wildlife starting with the infamous dingo and a variety of bird-life while the clear aqua waters are teeming with dugongs, dolphins, and migrating humpback whales. There are also more walking tracks than a hiker could shake their stabilising boot at.

To get up close and personal with the mysterious depths of the tantalising waters there are a variety of activities such as snorkelling, scuba diving, and glass bottom boat tours revealing stunning coral reef filled with vibrant tropical fish and marine life.

‘K’gari’ means ‘paradise’. The island is just that, a truly (and literally) unique and delphic destination.
